Keeping It Real: New Fake Review Detection
Google Maps has introduced a helpful feature designed to help users identify businesses that might be affected by fake reviews. This tool not only alerts users about suspected fraudulent reviews but also enhances the overall reliability of information found on the platform.
What’s New?
Initially launched in the UK, this feature is now available in the United States. It adds a warning notification to business profiles that have numerous suspicious reviews. If Google finds and removes fake reviews, users will receive a notification about the action taken. This alert will also highlight any “unusually high or low ratings,” indicating that reviews may have been manipulated.
Enhancing User Transparency
While Google has not shared the exact criteria used to flag unusual ratings, the new warning system provides an added layer of insight for users assessing the authenticity of a business’s reviews. Businesses that receive these alerts may face temporary restrictions on collecting new reviews while investigations are ongoing. In some instances, existing ratings may be removed until their authenticity can be verified.
How to Report Fake Reviews
Google encourages users to report reviews they suspect are fake. Here’s how:
- Open Google Maps and find the business profile.
- Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the profile.
- Choose “Report” from the menu.
- Select a reason, such as “Fake or misleading content.”
- Provide additional information and submit the report.
By reporting suspicious reviews, users can help ensure the accuracy of information on Google Maps, promoting a more trustworthy experience for everyone.
