A 30-year-old woman, May, working at Delta Electronics Thailand, tragically died after her request for extended sick leave was denied by her manager. May, suffering from an inflamed large intestine, had been on medical leave from September 5-9, supported by a doctor’s note. On September 12, her condition worsened, but her plea for more leave was rejected, prompting her to return to work the next day.
After just 20 minutes on the factory floor, May collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. She succumbed to complications from necrotising enterocolitis the following day.
Delta Electronics Thailand issued a public statement, expressing deep regret over her death. CEO Victor Cheng stated, “We are devastated by this loss,” and promised a full investigation. This incident has sparked widespread concern about employee welfare, medical leave policies, and the pressures faced by factory workers.
Labour rights groups are now calling for a review of workplace conditions, underscoring the need to prioritize workers’ health and safety globally. The case continues to attract international attention.
